What is Obedience Training?

Our ever-so excited furbabies love to express their excitement through “extreme” ways (excessive barking, chewing, jumping).

Without proper guidance and assistance on how to behave, your dog would not know how to function near humans or other pets. And these behaviours can even end up harming them (and you!)

Obedience training your dog helps in teaching them crucial life skills and behaviours to function in their human buddy’s world.

"Training is a great way to bond with your dog"

Obedience Training your GSD

The German Shepherd is one of the smartest breeds in town. And their inquisitive nature and adventurous gene make them a comparatively easy breed to train.

GSD’s can be given obedience training at around eight weeks.

Obedience training your German Shepherd does not just teach them the dos and don'ts of living with other pets and humans but is also the best way to keep them active, engaged and excited.

After all, a bored puppy is an unhappy puppy! Especially if it's a GSD.

Teach your Dog Obedience Commands

There are numerous ways to train your dog. From clicker training and positive-reinforcement training to professional dog training, the options are vast.

But, to start your German Shepherd with the basics at home - Reward-based dog training is a great option.

Dos of Training your German Shepherd

Before you start training your GSD with commands and rewards, there are certain things you need to remember.

German Shepherds are part of a smart and physically strong line of dogs. But they are rarely patient.

Your pet’s energetic nature could hinder your training. So, you will need to be extra-patient and calm while training your German Shepherd.

Few “DO’s” to keep in mind while teaching your pet commands and obedience are:

Get a Strong Dog Leash

Training your powerful GSD to walk under a leash is a great first lesson to start with. Go for a leash that’s made for training and can handle the initial pull and tug of your pet.

Do not move or yank the leash back when your pup pulls on it during training. Reward them if there is a positive outcome.

Keep your Training Treats ready

If you want to achieve the best out of your dog’s training, it’s best to keep the treats ready.

Reward-based training has shown to be successful in puppy training and German Shepherd protection training too. You can choose your pet’s favourite treats or training treats at hand and reward them with it for every achievement.

Set a Routine

Try to fix 10 to 15 minutes of training time in the day and evening with your GSD.

This is a great way to set on a cyclic routine for them, through which they will know that it is time to learn!

Teach them Obedience Commands

Your smart pet, may one day even learn to stand on his hind legs. But that does not mean you should skip the basics.

Start by teaching your pet to sit, using the “SIT” and slowly progress your way to “STAY” and “COME” commands. Repeat the command until they react to it instantly.

Being a protective breed of dogs, GSD's are first to jump at guests and strangers. Through these basic obedience commands, you will be able to calm them in such situations.

Praise and Pet your Dog

Other than the yummy treats, give your pooch the occasional compliments and "scratch on the back”, when they complete a successful training.

Remember, training your GSD is also a great way to build a relationship with them.

Training Treats for German Shepherds

Don'ts of German Shepherd Obedience Training

Now that you know the basics of training your GSD at home. Let’s look at some “Don'ts” during your training sessions.

Stay Calm and Confident

German Shepherd’s are one of the alpha breeds and they can easily sense the leader in the room.

Remain confident and clear while training your pet. You don’t have to assert dominance but try your best to not fall for their “puppy eyes” during your lessons. (We know it is hard!)

Don’t Bore your German Shepherd

GSD’s need to love what they do, to learn it quickly. So, keep the sessions short and exciting. And end the session when you find them exhausted.

Do not exceed the training time. A long training session for your German Shepherd ends up being boring and tiring! Set a main lesson for the day and practice it excitingly with them until they pick it up.

Be Consistent when Training your Pet

Be clear and consistent with your actions when training your dog. Do not skip to new lessons before they learn the previous one.

Throughout your lessons, use the same command terms with your German Shepherd. And try to be as patient as possible with your hyper Lil’ furbaby!

Don’t Punish your Pet

Be it a German Shepherd or any other breed of dog, don’t punish them during training. Using negative training methods could hinder your relationship with your pet.

Punishing your pet would only lead them to relate the training with something negative and end up behaving aggressively towards you.

Let us know if this guide helped you. We would love to hear from you and your good boy!
