Dog Safety Tips: Keep your Dog Safe and Calm During Fireworks
The festival of lights is right around the corner and as we begin to stock up on fireworks, let’s take a minute to think about the safety of our four-legged buddies.
Unlike humans, pets have extremely sensitive ears. So, when we light up fireworks to celebrate, our pets run under the table frightened!

Are Fireworks Toxic to Dogs?
Yes, fireworks can be toxic to dogs if ingested. The noise and pollution caused by fireworks have been proven to cause anxiety and health issues in dogs.
The loud noises and bright lights emitted by fireworks are too much for our dogs to take in, causing them to feel overwhelmed.
Some signs that your dog is feeling anxious are:
- Barking or whining
- Running around
- Hiding
- Trembling
- Aggressive Behavior
"Remember to watch out for subtle signs in your pet to indicate that the Diwali sounds and lights are troubling them."
Toxic chemicals (potassium nitrate, sulphur, etc) in fireworks can be extremely hazardous (and fatal, in some cases) to your dog if inhaled and need to be treated by the Vet immediately. They can cause serious health issues like:
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Bloody diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Acute kidney failure
- Ulcers
- Heart attacks (based on the breed and health history)
Dog safety tips during fireworks
To avoid any danger to your pet, there are few steps you can follow to keep your buddy safe and calm during these times:
Keep your dog and cat away from the fireworks area
The noise, smell and lights could all be very overwhelming for them. So, it’s best to keep them away from it.
Take your pet on a soothing walk
Before the fireworks begin, take them on a long walk. This will help them calm down and may also tire them enough to fall asleep.

Create a safe place at home to comfort your dog
Come up with a place for your bud to stay during the fireworks. Make sure this safe place is away from all the loud noises and toxic substances.
Food and hydration are important for your pets!
Make sure to feed your puppy/dog before the event begins. Also, keep their water bowl filled, as they may get thirsty if they are panting.
Play Soothing Music For Your Pet During the Fireworks
Try playing some relaxing tunes or their favourite song once the firework starts. This will help your pet stay calm and distracted from the jarring noises. Also another great idea would be to play cracker noises on your home stereo starting a few weeks before Diwali. Start with a low volume first. Gently increase the duration and volume of the cracker noises. This helps your pet get used to the loud cracker sounds well before Diwali and can help them cope easier.
Collar and tag for your pet
Due to their fear of fireworks, your bud may try to escape. Before the event, do check their dog collar/tag.

Calm your pet with soothing treats
If you can stay home with them, try to calm your pup down. You can even have treats at hand to reward them for their behaviour! Then your dog will associate the noise with something that they dont have to worry about, like their hooman right next to them with yummy treats!
